Understanding Your Application Status
When you check your status, you will see one of the following messages. Here is what they actually mean:
- Application Submitted: Your application has been received but not yet processed.
- Filtering: The system is checking if you are a returning student or a new applicant.
- Validation: NSFAS is verifying your details with the Department of Home Affairs and SASSA.
- Provisionally Funded: Good news. You are approved for funding, but NSFAS is waiting for your university or TVET college to send your registration data. You must register at your institution to finalize this.
- Awaiting Evaluation: Your documents are still being checked by a case officer.
- Funding Eligibility: The system is checking your household financial status (income under R350,000).
- Application Rejected: Unfortunately, you did not meet the funding criteria. (See the “How to Appeal” section below).
What to Do If Your Application Is Rejected
If your status says “Unsuccessful” or “Rejected,” do not panic. You have the right to appeal if you believe the decision is wrong.
- Log into your myNSFAS account.
- Click on the “Track Funding Progress” option
- Check the reason for the rejection (e.g., “Income threshold exceeded”).
- Click the “Submit Appeal” button.
- Upload the supporting documents that prove your household income is below the threshold (e.g., retrenchment letters, death certificates, or new payslips).
- Note: You usually have 30 days from the rejection date to submit an appeal.
