Step-by-Step Guide To Use NSFAS Eligibility
- Question 1: SA Citizen
- Why? NSFAS funding is only available to citizens of South Africa. You cannot apply if you are a permanent resident.
- Question 2: Public Institution
- Why? NSFAS only pays for studies at one of South Africa’s 26 public universities or 50 public TVET colleges. It does not fund studies at private colleges.
- Question 3: SASSA Grant Recipient
- Why? If you personally receive a SASSA grant (like the SRD, Child Support, or Disability grant), you automatically meet the financial requirements. NSFAS can verify this directly.
- Question 4: Household Income
- Why? If you are not a SASSA recipient, you must meet the income rule. Your total combined annual household income (everyone you live with) must be R350,000 or less.
- Question 5: Disability
- Why? This question only appears if your income is between R350,001 and R600,000. This is because the income threshold is higher for students living with a disability (up to R600,000 per year).
Understanding Your Result
- Likely Eligible: ✅ This means your answers match all the main NSFAS requirements. Your next step is to prepare your documents and submit your official application on the myNSFAS portal when applications are open.
- Not Eligible: ❌ This means one of your answers does not meet the core NSFAS rules (e.g., income is too high, or you plan to study at a private college). The result will explain why.
