The University of Pretoria (UP), commonly known as Tuks, has officially opened its online application portal for the 2027 academic year. As one of South Africa’s leading research universities, UP operates on a “first-come, first-served” basis for many programs. This means that once a program is full, no further applications will be considered, even if you meet the minimum requirements.

Admission Requirements and APS Calculation
UP calculates your Admission Point Score (APS) based on your achievement levels in six subjects. Unlike some institutions, UP does not include Life Orientation in the APS calculation.
How to Calculate Your UP APS:
- Six Subjects: Use your best six NSC/IEB subjects (excluding Life Orientation).
- Point Scale:
- 80%–100% (Level 7) = 7 points
- 70%–79% (Level 6) = 6 points
- 60%–69% (Level 5) = 5 points
- 50%–59% (Level 4) = 4 points
- 40%–49% (Level 3) = 3 points
- 30%–39% (Level 2) = 2 points
- Minimum Requirements: Most degree programs require a minimum APS of 28 to 35. High-demand programs like Medicine (MBChB) typically require an APS of 35 or higher, along with specific minimums in Mathematics and Physical Sciences.
Mandatory Documents for Online Application
Before starting your application on the UP portal, ensure you have clear, scanned PDF copies of the following:
- ID Document: A certified copy of your South African ID or passport.
- School Results: * Current Grade 12s: Your final Grade 11 results (signed by the principal).
- Completed Matric: Your final National Senior Certificate (NSC).
- Selection Programs: Some programs (like Architecture or Fine Arts) may require a portfolio or a specific departmental form.
